Picture Her Bound

MIALLThere are some cities that when you think of them, there’s an iconic theme, an identity that pops into your head.

New York has a theme song everyone can sing. The lights, glamour and fast paced lifestyle is what you expect.

Los Angeles is the city of stars, movies and fame. People are beautiful, the shopping is amazing and every day is gorgeous.

Chicago is jazzy, industrial and full of opportunity. It’s sort of a mesh between both coasts, with a space for the normal person.

New Orleans is a city that has a history that gives it so many different flavors. It’s a city where the party never ends.

When I was in New Orleans last year for Author’s After Dark, I swear there was always someone out partying no matter the hour. We’d call it quits around two in the morning and the good times were still rolling, and be at it again by around ten, and we were already late arrivals!

Everyone associates Mardi Gras with the city, and with that comes things like masks, peacock plumage, beads, boobs and outlandish costumes. On the same trip I, some friends and I were tossing beads off a bar balcony to anyone who even glanced out way and we wound up with several gentlemen waving their penises at us. I guess they thought it was the thing to do for beads, since they weren’t women, they showed off their other goods. And you know what? No one batted an eye. I’m pretty sure that if that happened at home, someone would be arrested for indecent exposure.

Besides the parties and plumage, New Orleans is a city of come-backs. I’ll never forget being in college and listening to the first reports of the devastation. A girl who lived on the same floor as me was from one of the hardest hit areas and for several days she didn’t hear from her family. I came back from class a few days later and on the white board in the lobby of my building were three words: They were found! I remember hearing people say that the city would never recover, that it would be better to just level it and move on. But it’s come back. New Orleans hasn’t gone away, it hasn’t let the hardships of life destroy it.

I guess New Orleans is a lot like a romance hero. It’s got scars and baggage. There’s a ways to go before it’s completely healed, but it’s strong and resilient. There’s a certain sexy quality there. It knows how to show a girl a good time and how to corrupt her to her worst.

New Orleans was the perfect setting for the Midnight Ink books. Against the backdrop of scars and glitz, eight different stories of love, new beginnings and hope couldn’t fail.
