Most surprising secondary character in Rescue Me Series
Here’s a question I didn’t get to answer at Joey Hill’s After-Launch party on Facebook the other day.
Which secondary character has surprised you the most for a full story?
Usually when I write a secondary character, it’s with the notion they may some day have a book of their own—unless they’re a villain like Allen Martin or Melissa Russo (Queen Bitch of the Universe).
But the one who surprised me most is one I never thought would actually even make it to even secondary character stage. I thought she was just going to be Marc’s ex-girlfriend Pamela who would never actually be “on the page.” She has a scene in Somebody’s Angel that really surprised me, though, and I want to know more about her. Her search for a Master (as in a Master/slave, Total Power Exchange dynamic) has me very intrigued, as well. I hope I can find a Master for her some day!
When I was writing this scene, I asked my readers in my Facebook Rescue Me Series discussion group the task of finding me a strawberry-blonde actress who might be good inspiration for my Pamela character. (I think the link to the group’s portal is later in this blog—but to join, just send a friend request to Karla Montague.) Lots of great photos were posted, but the woman who resonated with me most is Mireille Enos of the TV series “The Killing” and the movie “World War Z.” I like how she talks with her hands (so do I!), but mainly, in the interviews I watched of her, she has a calm, quiet demeanor, but also exudes confidence. Very much my introspective Pamela.
Here’s an excerpt of this scene from Somebody’s Angel (release day Dec. 23 at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and All Romance eBooks):
Marc drew a deep breath and rang the doorbell. Would she even be home? He probably should have called first but was afraid she’d just tell him to take a hike. Off a very high mountain cliff.
Her voice sounded wary. Good girl for being careful.
“It’s Marc D’Alessio. I need to talk with you.” He wondered if she’d even remember him. As the silence dragged out for several tense moments, he knew she did.
“I don’t think there’s anything more to say.”
“Oh, there’s a helluva lot to be said. Starting with an apology—my apology.”
Another pause, and then she buzzed him through. He took the stairs two at a time to the third floor and knocked on her door. His heart pounded, probably not from the mild exertion of climbing the stairs. What was he going to say to her? Could he undo any of the damage he’d caused without—?
The door opened, and Pamela stood there wearing a long, baggy sweater and jeans rather than her usual power suit. Her strawberry-blonde hair was pulled into a ponytail, not perfectly coifed as before. She’d lost weight, even in her face. The wary expression in her eyes told him he had his work cut out for him.
She stepped aside and waved him in. After offering him a glass of his favorite wine—they’d always shared a love of pinot bianco—they sat across from each other, he on the sofa and she in a French provincial chair with her left foot tucked under her knee.
They talked a bit about their jobs and social lives as if they’d never parted. But Pamela soon got him to focus.
“So, Marc, just why did you come here?”
Pamela had never been one to beat around the bush. “I just need to set some things right. Understand some things about myself better. I’ve screwed up a lot, including with you. Now I’ve met someone and just don’t want to make the same mistakes.”
Pain flashed in her eyes. Merda. He realized how selfish he’d been to come here. He’d made it all about him, not what Pamela needed.
“Pamela, I owe you an explanation for why I ran last year.”
“I think you made it very clear. I pushed too hard. I should have been happy to settle for what you could give without stirring the pot.”
Marc glanced away and ran his hands through his hair. He needed to unfuck this.
When Marc d’Alessio first rescued the curvaceous and spirited Italian Angelina Giardano at the Masters at Arms Club, he never expected her to turn his safe controlled life upside down and pull at his long-broken heartstrings. Months later the intense fire of their attraction still rages but something holds him back from committing to her completely. Worse, secrets and memories from his past join forces to further complicate his relationships with family, friends, and his beautiful Angel.
Angelina cannot give all of herself to someone who hides himself from her. She loves Marc, the BDSM world he brought her into, and the way their bodies respond to one another but she needs more. Though she destroyed the wolf mask he once wore, only he can remove the mask he dons daily to hide his emotions. In a desperate attempt to break through his defenses and reclaim her connection to the man she loves, she attempts a full frontal assault that sends him into a fast retreat, leaving her nobody’s angel once again.
Marc finds that running to the mountains no longer gives him solace but instead leaves him empty and alone. Angelina is the one woman worth the risk of opening his heart. Will he risk everything to become the man she deserves and the man he wants to be?
